What is it? Following close after the launch of the redesigned Subaru Impreza and the turbocharged WRX version is the ultimate edition of the model, the WRX STI. The STI promises to again combine high-revving power, AWD traction, and impressive handling in a packaged priced significantly less than most of its performance peers. (The STI moniker is short for Subaru Tecnica International, the high-performance and motorsports subsidiary of parent corporation Fuji Heavy Industries.)
Distinct bodywork with dramatic wheel arches helps the STI stand out from other Imprezas, along with exclusive front fascia, side sill extensions, rear wing, and four exhaust outlets. These cosmetic modifications are largely functional, either routing cooling air or balancing aerodynamic down force.
Offered only has a hatchback model this generation, the STI boasts a 2.5-liter boxer four-cylinder engine generating a peak 305 horsepower and 290 lb-ft of torque. This engine produces a high 14.7 psi of turbo boost, compared to 11.9 in the standard WRX. This potent engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission, and power is routed to the corners via an AWD system. The resultant drivetrain combination is good for a claimed 4.9-second 0-60 mph time.
Based on a stiffer platform than the previous generation, Subaru claims handling improvements with the performance-tuned suspension. Significant technology allows the driver to tailor the vehicle to a range of road or track needs. The Si-Drive, for example, provides the choice of three different modes that impact the electronic throttle control for mild and thrill-seeking driving styles. Similarly, the driver can select from three stability control programs, including Off.
Base price for the STI is $34,995--$1,000 more than the out-going STI sedan based on the previous-generation Impreza.
When will it be available? January 2008.
