What is it? At the Los Angeles Auto Show, Ford officially unveiled the 2008 Bullitt Mustang, a limited-volume model that commemorates the fortieth anniversary of the film. Ford had previously celebrated the movie and its legendary seven-minute chase scene with a Bullitt package on the previous-generation Mustang.

Like the original 1968 movie car, the 2008 model wears a dark highland green coat. It can also be had in black. The cinematic tribute goes further, replicating the subtle, rogue appearance of Steve McQueen’s hubcap-flinging coupe through efforts like removing all exterior badges and logos, including the chromed grille horse. The only moniker that remains is “Bullitt” on the faux gas cap on the decklid.

The front and rear fascias are shared with the Mustang GT, but the visage is distinguished with a black-mesh grille highlighted with aluminum reminiscent of the ’68. The rear has Bullitt-specific dual exhaust tips. Behind the 18-inch, cast-aluminum Euroflange wheels with gray spokes, the brake calipers are also painted gray. Inside, the austere cabin is dressed in black leather and offset with metallic trim.

Under the hood, the Bullitt has a 4.6-liter V8 that produces 315 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque. The slight power increase over the GT is aided by the first Mustang open-element air filter and an adaptive spark ignition system. The engine is calibrated to increase throttle response, and it is made more eager with a steep 3.73:1 rear axle ratio. The transmission is a five-speed manual.

The stock GT suspension has been tuned for more aggressive driving, with new shocks and a strut-tower brace. To manage the performance, more aggressive brake pads have been fitted.

A limited production run of 7,700 units is planned, carrying a $31,075 MSRP.

When will it be available? Early 2008.
