Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid |
|
What is it? The Silverado, redesigned for 2007, is one of our top-rated pickups, thanks to its steady ride, responsive handling, and generous load capacity.
Later this year, Chevrolet will start selling a full-hybrid version powered by a 300-volt NiMH (nickel-metal hydride) battery, an electric motor and a 6.0-liter 367-hp V8. The hybrid Silverado will be available at first in 2- or 4-wheel-drive Crew Cab versions. GM’s 2-Mode hybrid system uses sophisticated power-management hardware and software to optimize fuel savings and share loads between the gas engine and electric motors.
Besides using the electric part of the powertrain to get the truck moving from a standstill to as much as 30 mph, it is geared to provide extra boost at highway speeds. Cylinder-shutoff also saves fuel. These strategies are good for a 25 percent boost in overall fuel economy, says GM.
What is new or notable? This is the first full-hybrid powertrain application in a pickup.
CR’s take: Any significant fuel savings for a full-size pickup adds up fast; raising fuel economy from 12 to 15 mpg saves twice as much fuel in a year as raising fuel economy from 30 to 40 mpg in a small car. Our brief experience with a 2-Mode hybrid Chevy Tahoe indicates that the system works as advertised: invisibly.
When will it be available? Second half of 2008.
