What is it? The redesigned V70 wagon made its North American debut in Los Angeles. It is clear from the familiar size, configuration, and basic attributes that this V70 hones the basic formula applied to generations of Volvo family vehicles, without deviation. For those who have seen the redesigned 2008 XC70, the V70 is rather predictable and no less appealing for it.
The V70 is available with an exhaustive list of safety equipment, including a height-adjustable two-stage child booster seat, adaptive cruise control, collision warning, automatic braking, blind-spot warning, and lane-departure warning. The rear-powered liftgate has an anti-pinch feature to protect hands from accidental crushing.
The rear section has adjustable dividers to separate different types of cargo, and there is an available sliding load tray. The rear seats are split 40/20/40 for multiple configurations to accommodate long items.
Base price for the V70 is $32,465.
What’s new and notable? This marks the first time that a six-cylinder engine will be available for the V70.
CR’s take: It’s powered by the same 3.2-liter V6 we that criticized for being raspy and needing to be revved high to show its muscle. Further, we consider fuel consumption of 20 mpg overall in the S80 to be unimpressive and made worse by the requirement for premium gas.
