What is it? Making its North American debut, BMW will add a relatively affordable 1 Series to its U.S. lineup, positioned between the Mini Cooper and 3 Series. This entry-level coupe will come in two versions: the 128i and 135i. The 128i will feature a 230-hp, 3.0-liter six-cylinder and the high-performance 135i will have 300-hp with a twin-turbo engine. BMW claims 0-60 mph acceleration for the 135i is 5.3 seconds.
A 60/40 split rear seat is standard as well as BMW’s iDrive system, which controls all the audio and comfort features of the vehicle. Optional equipment will include a navigation system, satellite radio, HD radio, Bluetooth, and a USB port for an iPod for iPhone.
BMW hopes that the 1 will be the spiritual successor of the 2002 from some 40 years ago as an affordable, performance machine.
When will it be available: Spring 2008
