What is it? The second-generation Matrix gets a complete redesign for the 2009 model year. The basic formula remains unchanged, though the new car is slightly wider and lower than its predecessor. The Matrix will come in three trims: standard, S, and XRS. All-wheel-drive will be optional on the S grade.
The base Matrix has a 132-hp, 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with a choice of either a five-speed manual transmission or four-speed automatic. For those interested in a little more power, Toyota will offer an optional DOHC 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 158 horsepower, available with a five-speed automatic transmission.
Toyota promises improved braking performance with standard front and rear disc brakes on all models. Stability control will be standard on the XRS and optional on the other versions. Toyota will make ESC standard on all models by the end of 2009.
The updated interior again has a 115-volt plug and protective surfaced on the rear seat backs. A few minor interior updates evolve the packaging, with features like an available navigation system with XM traffic capabilities. Standard features on all trim lines include power color-keyed outside rearview mirrors, power steering, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, and daytime running lights. The S grade gets standard power door locks and window, cruise control, remote keyless entry, and MP3 capability.
When will it be available? February 2008.
