What is it? As with the Charger, Dodge has resurrected a coupe name to apply to the new Avenger production sedan and NASCAR race car. This new midsized sedan is a twin to the Chrysler Sebring we recently tested. Like the Sebring, the Avenger has a choice of three engines, starting with a 2.4-liter four cylinder with variable-valve timing produces 173 horsepower. A flex-fuel 2.7-liter V6 produces 189 hp and can burn either gasoline or E85, a mix of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. Both engines use a four-speed automatic transmission. The top engine is a 235-hp, 3.5-liter V6 mated to a six-speed automatic. All-wheel drive is available on the top-level R/T.
Unlike the Sebring, the Avenger looks a lot like it's larger sibling, the Charger. While the Chrysler 300 has been popular with consumers and some might wish for a less expensive or smaller version, the Charger has not been as well-received and mimicking its looks may not help the smaller Avenger.
What is new or notable: The top bin of the glove box serves as a drink cooler, and the cupholders in the center console can be heated and cooled on some models.
When will it be available? Spring, 2007.
