What is it? Hyundai is setting its sights high with its new midsized car-based SUV. With seating for seven and a high level of standard equipment and safety features, the South Korean carmaker is coming into this competitive market swinging. Powered by the same 260 hp, 3.8-liter V6 used in their flagship Azera sedan, the Veracruz gets the automaker's first six-speed automatic transmission that can also be shifted manually. All three trim levels include standard all-wheel drive and electronic stability control. The top Limited model comes with typical luxury amenities, and it can be had with a 605-watt audio system. Standard safety features on all models include front-side and curtain air bags, and active head restraints.
What is new or notable: Hyundai is working hard to shed its low-end economy car image. Like the new Azera and Sonata, the Veracuz could be a player capable of helping their cause.
CR's take: With the Veracruz, Hyundai continues to push the envelope with larger and more expesive vehicles. Based on a stretched Sante Fe, the Veracruz adds the Azera's engine and builds upon its luxury ammenities. Along with the new Saturn Outlook and Mazda CX-9, this segment continues to be extremely competitive.
