What is it? This four-door concept is built on a stretched Mustang platform, and it is intended to capitalize on the success of Ford's reborn pony car. With a 400-hp, 5.0-liter V8 beneath a "shaker" hood scoop reminiscent of 1960s Ford muscle cars, the design is also intended to evoke memories of the glory days of big, powerful American sedans. The V8 is designed to run on E-85 ethanol, and it is matched with a six-speed manual transmission. The Interceptor features inflatable rear safety belts, and front four-point safety belts that the carmaker claims are more comfortable and easier to use than conventional three-point belts. Ford says these may see production in the future.
What is new or notable: With domestic competitors following Chrysler's lead by developing rear-drive sedans, Ford is following suit in creating its own interpretation of a distinctly American car.
