What is it? The Equinox Sport is a somewhat souped-up version of Chevrolet small unibody SUV. The Sport version will have a much better powertrain than the regular Equinox, a 3.6-liter DOHC V6 rated at 263 hp, rather than the coarse and anemic 185-hp, 3.4-liter in the regular Equinox. The new engine, gradually making its way through GM's line, is here mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. There are some things about the Equinox we like, such as easy access to the flexible rear seats. Other attributes, such as clumsy handling, a wide turning circle, and a low-grade interior fail to impress and will not be fixed with more horsepower. However, the Equinox Sport handling characteristics will be different than with the current model, due to a revised suspension and more-aggressive, 18-inch wheel/tire fitment.
What is new or notable: Following Chevrolet tradition, the Equinox is given the "sport" treatment, with performance upgrades underhood and at each corner.
CR's take: It's no secret that we are far from impressed with the Pontiac Torrent and near twin Chevy Equinox. Some of our main gripes are the sloppy handling and rough engine. Judging by the 3.6-liter's virtues, it should help with power and refinement, but we'll reserve judgment about the ride and handling.
