Mitsubishi Lancer/Prototype X |
|
What is it? The redesigned Lancer sedan makes its debut in Detroit, using the same platform as the Outlander SUV. The new four-door sedan will be shorter than the outgoing model, but the new car's longer wheelbase might indicate a slightly roomier cabin. Mitsubishi will fit a 2.0-liter, 152-hp four-cylinder engine to all Lancers, though a PZEV version (partial zero emissions vehicle) generating 143 horsepower will be available in California. The base transmission is a five-speed manual, with a continuously variable transmission available as an option.
Fans of the Lancer Evolution will have to wait a bit longer for the unveiling of the production version of the tenth-generation EVO, but the Prototype X is clear indication of what the rally-inspired, all-wheel-drive performance sedan will look like.
The 2008 Lancer sedan will be available in three trim versions will be available, the DE, ES, and GTS.
When will it be available? Lancer, early 2007. Lancer Evolution, late 2007.
CR's take: In a stunning transformation, the new Lancer is one of the most attractive sedan designs on the market. If the driving dynamics have improved, as they have on the Outlander with which it shares its platform, the Lancer could be a very competitive small sedan.
