What is it? The i is a a tiny, four-passenger Japanese Kei-class car,
powered by a 64-hp 660 cc gas engine mounted under the rear seat and
cargo area. The iMiEV is an i converted to run on lithium-ion batteries
mounted under the floor and an electric motor in the rear. The company
claims a 60 to 70 mile range based on an overnight charge at 220 volts
or a 3-hour charge on a special large transformer. Both the i and iMiEV
are sold in Japan.
What's new or notable? Mitsubishi brought the i to New York to explore
the demand for designing the next generation-i to meet U.S. safety
standards.
