Mercedes-Benz M-Class BlueTec |
|
What is it? Mercedes-Benz' midsized M-Class SUV has received a minor facelift for 2009, but the bigger news is the coming availability of Mercedes' clean BlueTec diesel engine. This is essentially the same V6 turbodiesel as in the E320 BlueTEC sedan, but here it's rated at 210-hp. The diesel engine adds about $1,000 to the base vehicle's price. It was supposed to arrive for 2008 but was delayed by a drawn-out emissions certification process. For 2009 Mercedes is offering it in the M-Class, R-Class and the big, bulky GL-Class SUVs. Mercedes has said that the diesel improves fuel economy by 20 to 40 percent versus a gasolne alternative.
What is new or notable? Mercedes-Benz SUVs will offer a clean diesel, BlueTec, that uses a urea-injection system to cleanse nitrogen oxides from the exhaust stream. The urea tank needs replenishing (by the dealer) only once every 10,000 miles. A pair of 8-inch flat-screen monitors mounted behind the front head restraints form part of the optional rear-seat entertainment system.
CR's take: We found the gasoline-powered M-Class to be a comfortable and quiet vehicle with responsive handling and a firm yet supple ride. Interior trim is first rate, but reliability has been poor. When we tested the BlueTec V6 engine in the E320, we found it to be quiet, quick, and clean. It returned a very respectable 29 mpg.
When will it be available? October 2008.
