What is it? The Challenger, which is based on a shortened-wheelbase version of the Chrysler 300/Dodge Charger platform, will be coming to the public in three distinctly different flavors.
The high-performance SRT8 model with the same 6.1-liter, 425- horsepower Hemi V8 and five-speed automatic transmission used in the SRT8 Charger, is arriving at dealers this month as a limited-production model. But in 2009, it will be offered with a 6-speed manual transmission with a pistol-grip shifter.
For 2009, the high-performance SRT8 will be joined by a V6 and less- powerful V8 models--the SE and the R/T respectively.
The SE will offers a 250-hp, 3.5L V6 and standard equipment includes an audio system with MP3 capability. Higher-end entertainment and communications systems that allow for voice recognition and iPod interfacing are available as options. It will sell in the low $20,000 range.
The R/T is powered by the 5.7-liter, 370-hp Hemi V8, which produces 370 hp. The same 6-speed manual available in the SRT8 will be offered for the R/T.
What is new or notable? Jim Press, Chrysler's president, stole a page out of Toyota's playbook when he left the Japanese automaker. Like vehicles from Toyota's youth-brand, Scion, all three Challengers will be highly customizable with Mopar accessories and performance parts. They include a replacement aluminum hood with an air scoop, an array of oversized wheels, and many interior and exterior accents.
When will they be available? The SE, R/T and the 6-speed manual
version of the SRT will arrive this fall.
