What is it? Ford has built a taxi concept to show a potential, high-volume application for its upcoming Transit commercial van. Its 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is teamed with a four-speed transmission, combined this powertrain delivers 19 mpg in the city, according to Ford. Further, the company claims tailpipe emissions are reduced by 90 percent compared to traditional taxis.

What is new or notable? The Transit is a potential alternative to the ubiquitous Crown Victoria as America's taxi cab. The introduction in New York is more than coincidence, as city regulations are elevating fuel-economy standards for livery vehicles, spelling the end for traditional V8 livery sedans. While 19 mpg may not be as much as Mayor Bloomberg is hoping for, it's still almost double the 10 mpg city CR recorded in our last test of a Crown Vic.
