What is it? Honda introduced the second-generation Fit at the New York auto show, months after it had gone on sale in other, international markets. True to the original model, the new Fit addresses several weaknesses and adds features seldom seen in this car class. Notably, front leg room is improved, the clever "Magic seat" folds flat to the floor in one motion, and the steering wheel has a wide range of adjustment.
This new Fit has a longer wheelbase and a wider track. Along with moving the A-pillar forward, these changes promise more interior space. In Japan, the base engine is a 1.3-liter four-cylinder, though the U.S. model will have a 1.5-liter matched with a five-speed manual transmission or an available five-speed automatic transmission. In the Fit Sport, the automatic includes steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The wheel sizes have increased to 15 and 16 inches.
Standard safety equipment includes anti-lock brakes, side and side-curtain air bags, and active head restraints. Electronic stability control is available.
What is new or notable? Significant in this class, the Fit will offer an in-dash navigation system with 6.5-inch screen and voice recognition, tilt/telescope steering wheel, and USB audio input.
