What is it? Mini has recently integrated the John Cooper Works brand, enabling the BMW division to offer factory-direct JCW models, in addition to components through its dealer network. In New York, Mini showed both its new JCW hardtop and Clubman models for the first time in the United States.
Both models see the turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the Cooper S upgraded to produce 208 horsepower--up from 172. Mini claims 0-60 mph times of 6.2 seconds for the hardtop, 6.5 seconds. The Cooper S we recently tested performed the same sprint in 7.2 seconds.
In addition to the powerplant upgrades, these JCW models also feature exclusive brakes, suspension, exhaust, and 17-inch wheels. Further, the steering is calibrated for a sportier feel, as are the electronic stability control and traction control systems.
What is new or notable: Mini reports that it is more cost effective to exact horsepower from the turbo engine than the previous supercharged one, bringing more power to the people at a better price from the factory. The hardtop retails for $29,200 and the Clubman stickers at $31,450.
When will it be available? Summer 2008.
