What is it? Subaru has on display the R1e electric vehicle at the New York auto show. This two-seater has a fast-charge lithium-ion battery. This is different from the typical battery in that it can be partially charged without losing battery life. Plus, it can be recharged to 80 percent strength in 15 minutes using a dedicated charger or fully charged in eight hours using a standard household outlet.

The R1e has a claimed driving range of up to 50 miles with speeds to 65 mph. The life of these new batteries extends to 10 years or 1000,000 miles and it was designed in layers for easier recycling.

Subaru will begin evaluation of the vehicle in conjunction with the New York Power Authority over the summer.
