What is it? Denki means electric in Japanese, thus this is an all-
electric version of the Nissan Cube--a small, boxy hatchback popular
in Japan. The Cube is similar to the Scion xB, with rounded windows
and asymmetric styling that make it look a little like a child's toy.
The Cube's 1.3-liter, four-cylinder engine has been replaced with an
electric motor and an advanced lithium-ion battery pack. The wheelbase
has been stretched nine inches to make room for the extra batteries
under the seats. The new laminated lithium-ion batteries are produced
by NEC in a joint venture with Nissan. They use a manganese cathode,
which Nissan says makes them less susceptible to overheating--a
problem that has lead to fire in some lithium-powered laptop
computers. The automaker also says the laminated cells pack more power
into a smaller space and make them more stable.
What is new or notable? Nissan announced that the gas-powered Cube,
which has been on sale worldwide since 2004, will be coming to the
U.S. in 2009, probably as a 2010 model. Like the original Scion xB,
the company hopes to set a price low enough that young buyers will
have enough money left over to add custom graphics, stereo equipment,
and other personal features.
CR's take: With gas prices approaching $4 a gallon, we like the idea
of another compact model that offers a big-car space, without big-car
fuel consumption.
When will it be available? Probably at the end of 2009, as a 2010 model.
