What is it? The Infiniti FX luxury SUV is redesigned for 2009. First out of the box will be the up-level FX50, feature-laden entry that competes with the Acura MDX, BMW X5, Lexus RX, and others. The FX50 is distinguished by a 390-hp, 5.0-liter V8--a larger and more powerful engine than the 320-hp V8 in the outgoing FX45. Mated to that big engine is a seven-speed automatic transmission, like that found in the Mercedes-Benz ML-Class. A lower-trim FX35, with a 300-hp, 3.5-liter V6, is expected to follow on the heels of the FX50 introduction.
The FX has all-wheel independent suspension that uses double wishbones at the front and a multilink setup at the rear. The standard wheels are big 21-inch alloys. The FX seats five and the rear seatback is split 60/40. The rear sections fold flat with the fairly low cargo floor, extending the luggage area. Among the electronic goodies is a four-camera exterior vision system ("Around-view Monitor") that images the area all around the vehicle--a potentially useful as a parking aid. The interior looks light and airy, and it upholstered in padded leather with wood trim.
What is new or notable? Active rear-wheel steering, low and high-speed adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning system, and seven-speed automatic--rare in SUVs.
When will it be available? Early summer, 2008
