What is it? The Volvo XC60 made its North American debut at the New York auto show. Previously released at the Geneva show, this new SUV is smaller and lower than the XC90. It is powered by a six-cylinder turbocharged engine producing 281 hp. A non-turbo engine is expected to be introduced later. All-wheel drive and Volvo's instant traction system will be standard.
What's new and notable? Volvo boasts that the XC60 is the safest car they've made to date. It introduces a standard new feature that can help prevent low-speed fender benders such as those common in city traffic. Called "City Safety," this safety system allows the vehicle to automatically brake if the driver does not react quickly enough to a possible frontal collision.
When will it be available? Early 2009.
