What is it? For 2009, the sporty SL has received a facelift with a new grille and headlight arrangement, revised rear sheet metal, and some tweaks to the interior design. The premium-priced (approximately $95,000 to $175,000) SL is a hardtop convertible whose roof panels retract into the trunk at the push of a button. The base SL 550 comes with a 382-hp, 5.5-liter V8 and a seven-speed automatic. The more costly SL 600 gets a 510-hp, 5.5-liter turbocharged V12 mated to a five-speed automatic. The top-trim SL65 gets a 604-hp, 6.0-liter turbo V12. Based on experience with earlier models, we expect the multi-adjustable power seats to be very comfortable over the long haul. The steering wheel has redundant controls and paddle shifters so you can shift gears as with a manual. Retracting the top eats up a good deal of trunk space. Cabin storage seems a little on the lean side, too.

What is new or notable: A hot-air blower called "Airscarf" keeps the driver's neck and shoulders warm while driving with the top down.

When will it be available? Spring 2008
