What is it? The Venza, a midsized low-slung crossover, will be powered by a 2.7-liter 4-cylinder or a 3.5-liter V6 engine. While there are no numbers for the 4-cylinder, the V6 will produce 268-hp and both engines will be mated to a six-speed sequential shift automatic transmission. The wheel diameter on the base version will be 19-inches, the largest wheel size of any other 4-cylinder in Toyota's lineup. The V6 will have 20-inch wheels and a towing capacity of 3,500 lbs.

The Venza will seat 5 passengers and the rear seats fold flat to provide for additional cargo space. A new option for Toyota is a panoramic roof with separate glass panels over the passenger rows. Standard safety features include seven airbags, anti-lock brakes, traction control, stability control, and active head restraints.

What's new or notable? Toyota says the Venza blends the handling of a sports sedan, the flexibility of an SUV, and the amenities of a luxury vehicle. Toyota calls this new vehicle, a crossover sedan and notes that the Venza could be the first model in this new segment.

CR's Take: We've heard a lot of people expressing how much they miss the Camry wagon. Clearly, calling this raised hatchback a wagon would be marketing sacrilege. With the Venza, it seems, the Camry wagon has come full circle. To be fair, the Venza is more than a semi-Camry wagon mutation. This is a Camry, Avalon, and Highlander all rolled into one--not a bad thing. All-wheel drive will be available as well as a future hybrid version, but don't hold your breath for a third-row seat.

When will it be available? Late 2008 for the V6 version and a few months later for the 4-cylinder.
