What is it? The Verve concept is a small car designed by Ford of Europe. It gives clues to the general shape and appearance of the car that will replace the Focus. The Verve has a sleek aerodynamic shape, a little like a stretched jelly bean with large 18-inch alloy wheels. It has high window sills that leave the side windows rather short.
What is new or notable? The Verve has a tinted glass roof and high-tech telematics for mobile and internet connectivity. I also features pillarless side windows and LED head and tail lights.
CR's take: It was somewhat disheartening to hear Ford executives admit that, while European Fords have been some of the best small cars available there, the line-up here didn't match their capability or desirability. The Verve concept is an appetizer for the 2011 Focus replacement that will be based on the second-generation Focus on sale in outside the U.S. since 2005. But the old adage, "good things come to those who wait" can be a difficult sell in this competitive small car market.
When will it be available? Fall 2008.
