What is it? The Passat CC is a four-passenger sedan based on the Passat, but with a lower roofline and smaller trunk for more coupe-like styling. It is available with either a 200-hp, 2.0-liter, four-clylinder engine, or a 280-hp, 3.6-liter V6 engine and either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. To give the CC a sporty look, it has frameless windows and large, 18-inch chrome wheels.

What is new or notable? The Passat CC is the second in a growing line of coupe-like four doors from German automakers that started with the Mercedes-Benz CLS.

CR's take: Consider this a bargain-priced Mercedes CLS. The "four-door coupe" bodywork compromises visibility, headroom, and trunk space for style. VW has announced very ambitious sales goals; it's obvious that the niche-filler CC is going to pay a comparatively small role in achieving that.

When will it be available? Fall 2008.
