What is it? The big-selling Ford F-150 pickup has been redesigned for the 2009 model year. It will come in seven different trim lines and seemingly endless permutations of two- and four-wheel drive, bed lengths, cabs, and drivetrains. The three engine choices are all V8s, including two different 4.6-liter engines and a 5.4-liter. A diesel and a new direct-injection gasoline engine will follow in a year. The standard transmission is a six-speed automatic, except for the base two-valve V8 which retains the four-speed automatic. Ford says that the new frame uses some very high-strength steel for increased sturdiness and towing capacity as well as more interior space in the cabs. The interior design is sleek and modern, and features literally dozens of cubbies, bins and storage niches.
What's new or notable? Crew-cab models have a flat load floor in front of the rear seats, to make it easier to slide large items in and out. Side-curtain air bags with a rollover canopy are standard, as is Ford's anti-rollover stability control system. An integrated trailer-brake controller is said to increase stability when towing large trailers.
CR's take: Features are proliferating on pickup trucks and this refreshed Ford proves no exception. We appreciate the clever features that moved from the 2008 F-250 SuperDuty, like the integrated trailer brake controller and the fold-out tailgate staircase. The addition of side bed steps is vital to aid loading cargo over the F-150's high bed sides. Ford didn't introduce a light-duty diesel for this truck as of yet.
When will it be available? Fall 2008.
