What is it? The freshened SLK hard-top roadster has gained more of a
visual link to the Mercedes-Benz-McLaren Formula 1 racing cars than any
past updates. The main changes for the 2009 model are exterior
tweaks, some updates to two of the engines, and audio and telematic
enhancements.
The exterior features a new front end with larger air scoops and slight
restyling to the tail section. The base 3.0-liter V6 engine makes a bit more power, while the 3.5-liter V6 in the SLK350 now makes an even 300 horsepower, a
32-hp boost.
Inside the cabin the changes are even subtler, consisting largely of a new
steering wheel and changes to the trim around the gauge cluster. The audio
system now has built-in Bluetooth capability, an optional iPod connector now
resides in the glovebox, and voice-recognition technology is now optional in
the SLK.
What is new or notable? Mercedes claims that its new direct-steer
system delivers agility and steering feel on twisty roads while lowering
effort at slow speeds, such as in parking garages. In addition, the engine
in the base SLK300, is said to have been optimized for better fuel economy
and lower CO2 emissions.
When will it be available? April 2008.
