What is it?
The second-generation Honda Pilot has second- and third-row seats that fold flat into the floor, and both are split 60/40 for maximum passenger and cargo flexibility. Honda claims the third row now has room to seat an average-sized man comfortably.
What is new or notable?
The six cylinder engine now uses Honda's updated cylinder cutout system that can run on six, four, or three cylinders, depending on how much power is needed. The new Pilot also uses Honda's latest crash safety systems to promote pedestrian safety and compatibility between vehicles in accidents.
CR's Take: The original Pilot was one of the pioneers of what now is a mainstream category, the three-row car based SUV. Unlike the redesigned CR-V which became swoopier, the second-generation Pilot retains a boxy, chiseled look to maximize interior room. The dash-mounted shifter replaces the current clunky column-mounted shifter without taking up storage room in the center console. Honda is good at keeping mum on the details even though the new Pilot goes on sale around April. In the meantime, expect good deals on the outgoing Pilot.
When will it be available?
Spring 2008.
