What is it? Following on the heels of the V8-powered R8 sports car, Audi introduced a concept version with their V12 turbo-diesel engine. While the regular 420-hp, 4.2-liter twin-turbo engine can propel the R8 to a claimed 4.4-second 0-60 mph time, the oil burning 6.0-liter V12 engine will be even stronger: 500 hp and 737 lb-ft of torque, allowing it to accelerate to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds. Top speed is well over 186 miles per hour, according to Audi.
Slowing all of this power down are ceramic brake rotors with six-piston calipers. These brakes are not only lighter than conventional rotors, but they also have an incredibly long life, capable of lasting a claimed 186,000 miles. The suspension uses the magnetic ride system that changes settings depending on the driver's preference.
Style-wise the R8 V12 TDI concept features an even more aggressive front end and an adjustable spoiler that raises as speed increases.
What is new or notable? As fierce as the V12 TDI engine seems, Audi claims it will deliver an impressive 28 mpg. This engine allows the privileged few who can afford an R8 the ability to have their supercar without suffering the backlash of being totally wasteful.
