What is it? A BMW 3 Series powered by a diesel version of the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter, six-cylinder engine from the 3 and 5 Series sedans. BMW says the engine will be 50-state compliant and uses catalysts, particulate filters, and urea injection to clean particulates and nitrogen oxides from the exhaust.
The engine will generate 265 hp and 425 ft-lbs of torque. BMW claims the 335d will return 23 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway, while helping the sedan accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 6.2 seconds.
What is new or notable? The 335d uses urea, an ammonia-like liquid, to help scrub particulate matter from the exhaust. Urea must be replenished, or else the exhaust won't be cleaned as efficiently. BMW says refills of AdBlue are included in its no-charge service plan.
When will it be available? Fall 2008.
