What is it? Ford revealed the Ford Explorer America concept vehicle at the Detroit Auto Show. Ford is dropping the existing body-on-frame platform for a new unibody design, which Ford says will help to reduce weight and aid in driving performance.

The base engine is a 4-cylinder 2-liter engine is said to deliver 275 hp. A premium 340-hp, 3.5 liter V6 will also be available. These new engines claim to deliver 20-30 percent better fuel economy. In addition, the Explorer will have electric power steering, which Ford claims will help save about 5 percent in fuel. The Explorer will have seating for six passengers and some towing and off-road capabilities.

What is new or notable? The Explorer America's four-cylinder base engine is a turbocharged, direct-injection gasoline engine. According to Ford, it will deliver up to 20 percent better fuel economy and 15 percent fewer carbon dioxide emissions. Ford plans on adding EcoBoost to a half million Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles during the next five years. The 2009 Lincoln MKS will be the first production vehicle to utilize this technology.
