Mercedes-Benz Vision GLK Freeside |
|
What is it? The GLK will be the Mercedes-Benz entry into the small, luxury SUV class, where it will compete with the Acura RDX, BMW X3, and upcoming Audi Q5. It will closely follow the Vision GLK Freeside concept shown at the Detroit Auto Show.
Power for the concept comes from a 170-hp, 2.2-liter four-cylinder diesel engine that uses the Bluetec exhaust scrubbing system. The engine drives through a 7-speed automatic transmission and powers all four wheels, with torque split 45:55 front to rear.
What is new or notable? Mercedes-Benz system uses urea injected into the exhaust to remove particulate matter, helping this diesel comply with emissions standards in all 50 States.
CR's take It looks like a baby of the GL. The K stands for either Kompact or Kurtz--short in German. It is based on a C-Class platform and the cockpit is about 80 percent C-Class. Never mind the diesel engine in this show car, the production car will use either the 3.0-liter or 3.5-liter V6 units from the C-Class when it goes on sale in January 2009 as a 2010 model. The 20 inch wheels may not make it to production either. Mercedes officials admit that they were a bit late (four years after the BMW X3 introduction) to the upscale compact SUV party.
When will it be available? January 2009.
