What is it? A BMW X5 powered by a diesel version of the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter, six-cylinder engine from the 3 and 5 Series sedans. BMW says the engine will be 50-state compliant and uses catalysts, particulate filters, urea injection to remove particulate matter and nitrogen oxides from the exhaust.
The engine is said to generate 265 hp and 425 ft-lbs of torque. BMW claims the xDrive35d will return 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, while helping the SUV accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 7.2 seconds.
What is new or notable? The X5 diesel (and 335d) will be one of the first diesel vehicles to use the urea-injection system to scrub particulates from the exhaust. Urea, called AdBlue by BMW, is a liquid that must be replenished, or else the exhaust won’t be cleaned as efficiently. BMW says refills of AdBlue are included in its no-charge service plan.
When will it be available? Fall 2008.
