What is it? The Hummer HX is an reconfigurable off-road concept aimed squarely at the Jeep Wrangler. It is about two inches narrower than the two-door Wrangler, but it boasts almost 8-inch longer wheelbase, pushing its large, 35-inch tires right out the corners--a show-car design element that would likely be modified for production. Borrowing from the Jeep play book, the HX concept has removable doors and roof panels. For aggressive rock crawling, the fender flares can be removed to avoid damage, or to facilitate repairs. The slant-back body style is reminiscent of the HMMWV used by the military. A production version would likely have a traditional, squared-off back.
The HX features full-time 4WD with front and rear locking differentials. The front suspension has an electronic-disconnecting stabilizer bar, allowing more off-road articulation. Integrated into the front bumper is a winch, and the SUV is protected underneath with skid plates.
The HX is a four seater, with bucket seats for front and rear passengers. In place of a traditional stereo, the HX has only built-in speakers. For music, an external device, such as an iPod, must be connected.
What is new or notable? The HX has a 3.6L V6 underhood mated to a six-speed transmission, promising a significant power and refinement improvement over the base five-cylinder powertrain in the H3. The 3.6L produces 304 horsepower and it is capable of running on E85.
