What is it? The Model X is the next vehicle after the Model S. The two share a platform and the electric drive. For the X, Tesla added an additional front mounted electric motor to drive the front wheels to make it an AWD SUV. As in the Model S, a front trunk remains.
The Model X gives Tesla a foothold into the luxury 3-row SUV segment. It benefits from the same packaging advantages of the S, a virtue of the low mounted battery and lack of a conventional driveshaft.
The up swinging rear doors allow easy access to the second and rear most row but won't clear many garages. Those doors also preclude a conventional sunroof.
The X online ordering process is already under way.
When will it be available? Early 2014.
