What is it? Last year, Audi brought the RS5 coupe to America; for the 2014 model year, it will follow up with the RS5 convertible. Based on Audi’s A5 coupe and convertible, the RS models eschew the turbo and supercharged Audi engine, instead stuffing a honking 4.2-liter V8 into the engine bay. This motor puts out 450 hp at 8,250 rpm, giving the convertible a 0-60 mph time of 4.9 seconds, and an electronically limited top speed of 174 mph.
What’s new or notable? Audi claims the RS5 convertible will get the best fuel economy “in its class,” of 16 city/22 hwy/18 combined, using EPA ratings. More significantly, perhaps, that means it won’t be saddled with any gas guzzler tax.
CR’s take: Like other A5 convertibles, the fabric top can be raised or lowered at speeds up to 30 mph. It takes 15 seconds on the way down, or 17 seconds up. But by that time, in this car you’ll be way beyond that 30 mph limit.
When will it be available? Spring 2013
