What is it? It may look the same from outside, but underneath the new Ram gets a new frame, optional adjustable air suspension for a better ride. The base engine is a 306-hp, 3.6-liter V6 matched with a new eight-speed automatic transmission that Chrysler says will deliver 20 percent better fuel economy than the 3.7-liter six-cylinder it replaces. Buyers looking for more power can opt for a 395-hp, 5.7-liter Hemi V8, also available with the eight-speed automatic. Other fuel saving tweaks include improved aerodynamics, grille shutters, and start-stop technology. Interiors have been updated with an improved look and materials, and Chrysler’s Uconnect infotainment system.

What is new or notable? The eight-speed transmission is controlled by an electronic dashboard-mounted rotary dial shifter to save space and enable quicker shifts.

CR’s take: Updates to the Ram seem like worthwhile improvements, especially if claims of better fuel economy hold up.

When will it be available? Fall 2013.
