What is it? The i8 convertible is an extended-range EV. It’s been shown on the auto show circuit for a few years in coupe form. As BMW counts down to the 2014 production date, the i8 show cars are more closely representing the final production shape, according to BMW, although the final product will be a coupe.
BMW says the car will be able to run on electricity for 80 to 100 miles and a gas engine will kick in for longer distances. Acceleration is said to match that of a BMW M3, a V8 powered high performance 3 Series. The price is likely to be above $100,000.
When is it on sale? 2014.
