What is it? A new version of the Mercedes-Benz E-class, a hybrid that uses the lithium-ion battery system from the S350 hybrid, along with Mercedes’ ubiquitous  3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine. The car can reportedly travel at up to 100 mph in “sailing mode” (Coasting,  or decelerating), and it will turn off the engine either at stops or at speed when it’s not needed.

What is new or notable? The E400 Hybrid  brings Mercedes’ hybrid technology already showcased on the larger S-Class sedan to the more affordable and popular E-Class sedan. It will join the E350 Bluetec diesel in Mercedes’ fuel-sipping lineup.

When will it be available? Second half of 2012
