What is it? Hyundai introduced the long-promised sporty version of the unique-looking Veloster hatchback. The Turbo is a coupe powered by a 2.1-liter turbocharged, direct injection four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed automatic. Hyundai says this powertrain will deliver 201 hp. The Veloster Turbo is slotted to compete against small sporty cars such as the Honda Civic Si, Mini Cooper S, and Volkswagen GTI. Hyundai claims that the Veloster Turbo will come out of the gates quick and offer the best power-to-weight ratio of the bunch. We'll see when we buy one to test.
What's new or notable? Hyundai estimates that the Veloster Turbo will get 38 mpg on the highway, which is a lot considering the horsepower this car promises to deliver. Visually, the Turbo looks much different than the normally-aspirated model, with a reworked, intimidating fascia and 18-inch alloy wheels with chrome insets.
When will it be available? Summer 2012.
