Consumer Reports auto experts report from the 2011 New York Auto Show in New York City.
Scion IQ

What is it? Scion will offer a tiny model sold overseas as the Toyota iQ, targeting city dwellers who prize a small footprint, fuel economy, and affordable pricing. Cleverly packaged, the iQ is a 3+1 car with seating for three adults and one child, admittedly favoring those of slight stature.

To enable fitting so many people in its short 120-inch length, the iQ employs several strategies to maximize space, including a compact air conditioning system, electric steering, inverted front-mounted differential, flat gasoline tank, and slender seat backs.

Power comes from a tiny 90-plus-horsepower, 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine with a continuously variable transmission. This combination promises an EPA-rated combined fuel economy in the high 30s.

What's new or notable: To address safety concerns, the iQ boasts 10 air bags, including an industry-first rear-window curtain, along with standard ABS and stability control.

When will it be available? Mid 2011.
