What is it? The Mazda5 microvan will get a new design for the 2012 model year. The 5 will be powered by a new 157-hp 2.5-liter MZR I4 engine, and can be paired with either a manual or automatic transmission. It will be available in three trims--Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring. Pricing will start at $19,990.

The new Mazda5 wears the latest corporate "smiley" face, as seen on the Mazda3. Once again, this segment-blurring model has dual sliding rear doors and three seating rows.

The outgoing six-passenger microvan has been a class favorite in our tests combining the utility of a small minivan with small-car maneuverability and affordability. The current powertrain is relatively refined and responsive, providing adequate performance, but it lacks reserve power when carrying full loads or climbing hills. Fuel economy is a decent 23 mpg overall.

When will it be available? January 2012
