What is it? Volkswagen unveiled its BlueSport roadster, a mid-engine sports car that seems to draw inspiration by the first-generation Audi TT and Honda S2000. The small, rear-drive car promises to combine engaging open-air motoring with thrifty fuel consumption.

The interior features a simple, clean design with two large gauge pods within a single binnacle. Three rotary dials provide the interface for the climate control system. Beneath them on the transmission tunnel is a touchscreen display, positioned rather low for use while driving.

What's new or notable? The roadster is powered by a 180-horsepower 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine with a claimed 42 mpg average overall, with up to 50 mpg on the highway. It is teamed with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. Despite the high fuel economy figures, VW claims a 0-60 mph time of a sporty 6.6 seconds and a 140-mph top speed.

CR's take: This mid-engine roadster could be considered the spiritual successor of the early-70s Porsche 914, a vehicle originally developed by VW, or as a modern-day Kharman Ghia. Unlike the Eos, the mid-engine configuration has the potential of offering truly sports car handling. While roadsters are mostly indulgent (and fun) toys, the availability of a diesel may lend it an air of environmental responsibility and frugality. The soft top is unusual in a world of folding hardtops, but the engine would get in the way.
