What is it? The first Lexus hybrid to emphasize economy over performance, the HS 250h four-door sedan is also the first model from the brand to be sold only as a hybrid. No conventionally-powered version will be offered. Slightly longer than a Lexus IS sedan, the front-wheel drive HS 250h is based on the European market Avensis platform. A full compliment of luxury and technological features including leather interior, moonroof, an audio system with satellite radio, Bluetooth, and a USB iPod connector, voice activated navigation system, lane departure warning with steering assist, and telematics system will be part of the package. Powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine matched with Lexus hybrid drive, the system produces 187 total horsepower. Lexus clams the HS will have the best fuel economy of any luxury vehicle sold in the U.S.
What is new or notable? Lexus latest telematics system provides 24/7 roadside assistance, stolen vehicle locator, collision notification, and access to operators who can send destinations to the cars navigation system. Customers can also send destinations and points of interest from their computer or other web-enabled device.
CR's take: If you want a hybrid that's more posh than a Prius, here's a car for you. Sure Lexus has hybrid luxury cars, but they focused on performance more than fuel economy. Instead, the HS pushes responsibility with luxury, offering seemingly every electronic feature available. We'd expect fuel economy to equal or exceed that of the Camry hybrid given this cars smaller footprint and better aerodynamics. Lexus made a jab at diesels"Last time I checked, diesel fuel was much more money"which seemed targeted at the BMW 3 Series diesel. We have to try the new navigation system controller to be convinced that it is as natural-feeling and intuitive as Lexus claims.
When will it be available? Late summer 2009.
