What is it? BMW used the Detroit Auto Show to introduce another hybrid concept. Following the introduction of the BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid in Los Angeles, BMW showed the Concept X6 ActiveHybrid. It uses an 8-cylinder engine and electric drive through a two-mode transmission. BMW claims the X6 hybrid uses 20 percent less fuel than a comparable vehicle with just an internal combustion engine.
What's new or notable? The X6 hybrid is a full hybrid that is similar to the Chevrolet Tahoe/Cadillac Escalade/GMC Yukon hybrids. It uses the dual-mode system that allows the vehicle to run on full battery power at low speeds before the ICE kicks in. The hybrid system can also provide additional power while driving. Both models charge the battery via regenerative braking.
When will it be available? BMW claims both models will be ready for production sometime in 2009.
