What is it? Following the 2007 introduction of the second generation Mini hatchback, Mini is rolling out an updated convertible. Like the hatchback on which its based, the new convertible is slightly larger than the model it replaces, with updated styling. Cooper and higher performance S versions will again be available, powered by the same 1.6-liter engines used in the hatchback. The base model produces 118 hp; the turbocharged and direct injected S engine develops 172 hp. Mini claims the new models will have better handling, performance, and efficiency than the outgoing convertibles. Like the first generation convertible, a sliding feature allows the car to be driven with the top partially open, and the top can be opened or closed at speeds up to 20 mph.
What's new and notable? A new electromechanical roll bar pops up to protect occupants in the event of a rollover.
CRs take: Confounding controls aside, Minis have done well in our testing, and are fun to drive. Reliability of the hatchback has been well above average.
When will it be available? Spring 2009
