What is it? This is the highest-performance Mustang variant shown in Detroit, just weeks after the redesigned 2010 pony car made its debut at the LA Auto Show. The formula remains the same as before, with the Mustang GT enhanced bumper to bumper, with a more aggressive appearance and powertrain performance to match.
The 2010 version adapts the performance from the previous GT500KR "King of the Road" with a supercharged 5.4-liter DOHC V8 that produces 540 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. Power is routed through a six-speed manual transmission, with revised gearing to aid highway fuel economy.
Compared to the based Mustang GT, the GT500 is tuned for improved road holding, with specific springs, dampers, and large 19-inch wheels shod with Goodyear F1 Supercar tires. The GT500 includes a stability control system with driver-controlled modes for regular and track driving. There is a "off" mode, as well.
Cosmetics and aerodynamics are enhanced with a unique front air splitter, front fascia, grille, and rear spoiler. A hood extractor helps remove engine heat. The interior benefits from the Mustangs redesign, and the Shelby version dresses up the cockpit with aluminum pedals and dash trim, white shift knob, leather seats with Alcantara inserts, and abundant logos.
What is new or notable? Ford wasted no time in introducing its flagship Mustang, as the company readies for competition with the Dodge Challenger and upcoming Chevrolet Camaro. For now, the horsepower advantage goes to Ford.
When will it be available? Spring 2009.
