What is it? Based on the boxy Kia Soul four-door hatchback due this 2009,
the Soulster is a convertible concept with a two-piece top that allows open
air motoring for front or rear passengers. With a shortened windshield,
different trim, and larger 19-inch wheels than the production Soul, the
Soulster has a lower, more aggressive appearance. Rear and front passenger
seats fold flat for cargo, and under floor storage compartments add to
versatility. A 120-hp, 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine matched with a
five-speed manual transmission powers the front-wheel drive concept shown,
but Kia says other powertrain options could include a diesel engine.
What's new and notable? The Soulsters roll bar does double duty, providing both a measure of protection and an anchor point for the roof panels.
CR's take: This concept is reminiscent of discontinued open-top small SUVs like the Isuzu Rodeo or Suzuki Sidekick/Vitara, only the Kia isnt meant to
go off-road. The fact that similar models are off the market in spite of a
big growth in small SUV sales makes us wonder how big the market for the
Soulster would be.
