What is it? An all-new four-door Honda Insight hatchback makes its debut at the Detroit auto show, after the concept version appeared at the LA show in November. This new, five-passenger Insight will continue to use Hondas conventional, relatively mild hybrid system called Integrated Motor Assist, but with a twist: It allows the driver to control the amount of electric boost and thus battery charge. To aid hypermilers, the Insight provides real-time feedback on the dashboard to help the driver maximize fuel economy. Honda claims this so-called Eco-Assist feature provides a more fun and rewarding hybrid experience, because it allows the driver to take a more active role in saving fuel.

What's new or notable? The Insight is expected to be priced below current hybrids, and will be slightly smaller than a Prius: about 2.5 inches shorter, an inch narrower, and two inches lower overall. The styling draws clear influence from Hondas advanced fuel-cell car, the FCX Clarity.

When will it be available? Spring 2009
