What is it? BMW unveiled the new Z4 roadster at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The redesigned two-seater will be offered with three engines worldwide, and the U.S. market will get a choice of two 3.0-liter six-cylinder engines. The sDrive30i produces 255 hp while the twin-turbocharged sDrive35i puts out 300 hp. Both models will be available with a six-speed manual transmission. In addition, the sDrive 35i will also be available with a seven-gear automatic dual clutch transmission. The 30i will also be available with an optional six-speed automatic. Both automatic transmissions feature steering-wheel paddle shifters. In addition, the Z4 will feature standard Dynamic Drive Control, which gives the driver the ability to alter suspension settings. Pricing for the sDrive 30i will be in the mid-$40,000 range, while the sDrive35i will start in the low-$50,000 segment.

What's new or notable? The Z4 will be the first BMW roadster (two-seater) to feature a retractable hardtop, which BMW claims will open and close within 20 seconds with the touch of a button. Compared with the previous model, the roof system increases visibility with larger side windows and a bigger see-through rear window. The roofline is also higher to allow for easier access through the door openings and increased elbow and headroom.

CR's take: Hopefully BMW has worked on the steering of the new Z4, because we were disappointed by the Z4s imprecise handling when we tested it. It would also be a positive if the dynamic drive system can eliminate the choppy ride of the last-generation Z4.

When will it be available? End of the first half of 2009.
